Amended Individual Return - Form 1040X
File Form 1040X, an amended tax return, to change the information on your original return.
The reasons to file an amended tax return are numerous: the information on your return may be incorrect, you may have forgotten to report additional income, or you may have forgotten to claim a deduction or credit.
It is not necessary to file an amended tax return due to a math error - the IRS will automatically correct those without your prompting.
If you need to file a 1040X, you should do so within three years of the date you filed the original tax return, or within two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.
Once filed, Form 1040X will become your new tax return, changing the information submitted in the original.
