How can I find out if a college student is a dependent?

You can claim a full-time college student under the age of 24 as a qualifying child, provided they pass all of the other tests. Education is considered an acceptable absence, exempting that dependent from the requirement of living with you for half the year.

If the student does not meet the requirements of a qualifying child, you may be able to claim them as a qualifying relative.

See “Who qualifies as a dependent?” for further details.
