How to File 2010 Taxes in 2014

The Last Day to get a 2010 Tax Refund was April 15, 2014.

According to the IRS, you have three years after the original due date to file a late return and still get a refund.

2010 returns were due on April 18, 2011. If you were expecting a refund from your 2011 taxes, you had until April 15, 2014 to file your 2010 taxes and get your refund.

If you never filed your 2010 return, don’t plan on claiming your refund. After the three year statute of limitations deadline passes, the US Treasury holds onto your refund money and it’s gone forever. You can’t claim it or apply it to another year.

Can I e-file?

Unfortunately the answer to this question is no. E-file is only available for current year returns between the months of January and October. That means the last chance you had to e-file a 2010 return was October 15, 2011.

You can still paper file your 2010 return, it just requires a little extra effort and takes a little longer to process.

Even though you have to paper file, it’s still easiest to prepare your return online. Online tax preparers like PriorTax will automatically fill out your return for you based on the information you enter. Then all you have to do is print it out and mail it to the IRS.
