A tax extension automatically gives you until October 15, 2021, to file your return with the IRS without incurring any failure-to-file penalties.
Though an extension gives you an extra three months to file, it does not give you an extra three months to pay. When you file your extension prior to the April 15th deadline, you will have to estimate your tax liability and pay any tax due to the IRS.
